Well, this is a new medium for me. My words have appeared in print and online, in radio and audio recordings, in video and on stage, and now they’re going to be stamped in cement on a Muscatine sidewalk somewhere.
It’s true! Inspired by the poetry contest that Writers on the Avenue was holding in April, I wrote a poem and entered it in the Wandering Words Sidewalk Poetry contest hosted by the Muscatine County Arts Council. I also convinced some other members of Writers on the Avenue to submit lines for an exquisite corpse poem and I entered that, too. I thought, I’m going to show my support for the literary arts in Muscatine.
And guess what? Both poems were among the five selected Iowa poet laureate Mary Swander to be cast in stone in Muscatine!
Muscatine brags about Mark Twain and Max Allan Collins. If I have my way, someday they’ll brag about me.
I wonder how long letters carved in cement will be readable, given the kinds of winters we have here?
