Remember how, back in December, I wrote my first humor piece for the Midwest Writing Center’s e-zine? That was a big step. This week I wrote my first feature piece for a newspaper. Whoa, people! Just, whoa. I’m really branching out here. I’m proliferating.
Here’s the question, though. Do different styles, challenges, and experiments with other genres help us hone the craft? Or am I just coming up with distractions to keep me from revising the current novel and finishing the next?
I will endorse what every journalist-turned-writer I know has told me, though: journalism is excellent training for the revision process. Every word has to earn its place, to the power of three.
